How to Use the Library Hours Helper

A tool for searching a library by name to check whether it is open today and until what time. We have organized public data for 3,516 libraries as-is, and we always show how certain each judgment is.

What this tool does

Pick a library name or region, and we show its closed days, weekday/Saturday/holiday operating hours, how many books and for how many days you can borrow, seat count, material counts, phone number, and homepage, for 3,498 libraries nationwide (as of the 2026-09-06 merge).

Values are shown exactly as published in the public data. We do not rewrite or summarize them.

How we decide "open today"

This is the most important part. Libraries write their closed-day field freely, so nationwide there are 512 distinct strings. We first split those strings into six groups: closed every week on a fixed weekday(e.g. "every Monday"), closed only on specific week-numbers of a weekday(e.g. "2nd and 4th Monday"), holiday wording only, weekday plus holiday wording together, open year-round, and free-text we cannot parse.

Only fixed weekdays, week-numbered weekdays, and fixed calendar dates(like Jan 1) are judged precisely right now. If today matches one of those, we say "closed" with confidence.

But 90.7% of libraries also carry holiday-style wording. We do not yet have a public-holiday calendar(including lunar holidays like Seollal and Chuseok), so when the weekday rule says "open" we still do not know whether today happens to be a holiday. In that case we say "open by weekday rule" and are upfront that holiday handling is not built yet.

What this tool cannot do

  • It cannot judge public-holiday closures. As explained above. We will fill this in once we build a holiday calendar.
  • Temporary closures are not reflected. Sudden closures for maintenance or other reasons are not in the standard data, so we do not know about them either. Call ahead if it matters.
  • We cannot keep the data current. We only have what each library submitted. If a library stopped updating, we are stuck at the same point.
  • It sends no notifications. It is a look-it-up-when-you-need-it tool.

How to read the table

Operating hours are split into three rows: weekday, Saturday, and holiday. A row with no value in the source data is left out of the display too.

Loan count and loan days are how many books a library card can borrow at once and for how long. Both vary by library.

Common sticking points

My library isn't listed. That library has not yet been registered in this standard data. We leave it blank rather than guessing.

The closed-day text looks unfamiliar or just says "other"(원문 기타). Some local governments wrote it freely instead of using a standard weekday format. We show the original text as-is, so check with the library directly for the exact meaning.

Where do records go? Only the libraries you recently viewed stay on this device; nothing is sent to our server. Details are in the privacy policy below.
